The measurement and interpretation of blood lactate (a bi-product of anaerobic respiration) allows the fitness professional to structure training regimes in a way that improvements can be seen in the increase of intensity level and duration of physical activity, which can be performed before blood lactate levels rise rapidly (lactate inflection point) leading to muscular acidosis and impaired muscular function. This increase in intensity levels and duration are important in the optimal development of the anaerobic energy system. Before using the meter and the lancet system for the first time, it is necessary to read through the detailed operating instructions carefully. Basically, switch on meter and wait until Code blinks prior to calibrate the meter with the code strip of the correct type. Then, insert correct type of test strip and prepare for the first meter reading. Adjust penetration depth of the lancet system and insert the disposable needle. Place the lancet against a clean fingertip and release the lancet. Remember to remove the needle in a sharps bin. Apply drop of blood to cover test pad completely, close flap immediately, and wait for the reading. These steps must be accompanied by proper blood handling techniques. Furthermore, used materials must be disposed according to local health regulations.
